Modelling bioaugmentation: Engineering intervention in anaerobic digestion

Bioaugmentation – the addition of specific microorganisms to microbial consortia obtain functions - is a promising method improve performance sub-optimal anaerobic digestion processes and recover methane production. The present study implements for first time model with bioaugmentation functionalities, enabling dynamic microbiological augmented systems. based on previous advanced mathematical focused ammonia inhibition, which was extended. Three inhibited experiments were simulated, where involved of: (i) hydrogenotrophic methanogenic archaea; (ii) combination hydrogenotrophs syntrophic acetate oxidizing bacteria; (iii) acetoclastic archaea reactors. Methane productivity, pH, correctly predicted by model, weighted absolute percentage errors below 10%. Trends in volatile fatty acids accumulation consumption showed good agreement between silico vivo data. Simulations revealed that will result process improvement when specialized are used: not only do they establish themselves environment, but also help recovery methanogens. Overall, approach adopted describe phenomena resulted robust computational tool simulation general strategies.
